Rev. John J. Buckley, C.M. as Chaplain of the Seton Shrine


After a number of years the Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton once again has a chaplain. Father John J. Buckley, C.M. arrived in Emmitsburg on November 3, 1999. He brings many years of experience in a variety of settings from Michigan to Ethiopia to his work at the shrine, It has been several years since a chaplain has been available and father says he is feeling his way in his new ministry.

Father Buckley has an office in the museum area. He is available Wednesday to Sunday afternoons for counseling and t Sacrament of Reconciliation. One of the principal changes father's arrival brings is the reinstitution of the celebration of 1:30 p.m. Mass. From Wednesday to Sunday Father Buckley celebrates the liturgy at St. Elizabeth Ann's altar. Many pilgrims come hoping to attend Mass at the shrine. Now the opportunity is 

available several days each week. Prior to coming to the Seton Shrine Father Buckley was in Ethiopia. There he served as a seminary professor at the Capuchin Franciscan Institute of Philosophy and Theology. His position enabled him to help a number of young men who sought his guidance. he spent a number of years teaching at the Vincentian novitate in Ridgefield, CT and on the Miraculous Medal Mission Band. He also taught at St. John Vianney Seminary in Miami and St. Thomas More High School in Philadelphia. He served as a campus minister at Niagara University and at the retreat house in Spring Lake, MI.

Father Buckley's wealth of experience makes him a great asset to the shrine. He looks forward to meeting all the pilgrims who come to the valley.
