Spring 2003

Easter Alleluias echo through our minds during these welcome days of spring. Here at the shrine, we pray that songs of hope and joy may also reach the hearts of all who long for peace.

The lead article of this issue summarizes a homily given by Father Michael Kennedy, C.M., the Chaplain of the Seton Shrine. Father Kennedy reminds us of incidents and events in the early life of Elizabeth Ann which can inspire us 200 years later.

Here in Emmitsburg when we observe the increased activity as helicopters and jets fly overhead to protect nearby Camp David, I also become more aware of the impact of global military action in 2003. Again, St. Elizabeth Ann can be a source of inspiration.

On April 13, 1809 she wrote from Baltimore to her sister-in-law Cecilia Seton to support her efforts as she, too, became a convert to Roman Catholicism, Mother Seton said:

Fear must not dwell in our
breast a moment … I trust
in our dear Lord that his love
will triumph in the hearts
(of all) thro' every danger
of the world …

Happenings at the Shrine

Sister Ellen LaCapria, D.C., Mission Services, conducted a Workshop on the use of creativity in the work place. Both docents and staff responded to this valuable activity which provided opportunity to voice ideas and to break away from routine and status quo.

To assist pilgrimage coordinators and shrine directors in the endeavor of following the Holy Father's urging to "put out into the deep" and to provide opportunities for our people to step away from their daily routine in an attempt to draw closer to the Lord. The National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception sponsored a Workshop for Diocesan Pilgrimage Coordinators and Shrine Directors in Rome from February 21 to 28, 2003.

The purpose of the workshop was to emphasize the significance of pilgrimages in the life of the Church and offer Diocesan Pilgrimage Coordinators and Shrine Directors practical suggestions and initiatives which could be implemented on the local level. Mr. Doug Peterson, associate administrator of the Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, traveled to Rome to attend this workshop.

Docents from the Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann participated in the Master Docent 2003 Series Workshops on February 21 and 22 at Frederick Community College. All historic sites in the area are witnessing increased interest in programs related to the Battle of Gettysburg since 2003 marks the 140th anniversary of the movement of armies from both the north and the south through Frederick County.

On March 10, staff of the shrine gathered to focus on the spiritual aspects of the mission during a retreat presented by Sister Suzanne Baumgartner, D.C. During the course of the day, Reverend Michael Kennedy offered the Liturgy for the participants.

Mother Seton's Valley - 2003

February's days of windblown snow
obscured the mountain view
and turned the valley white.

Brave pilgrims moved through wintry blasts
to bring their cares and dreams
before the Lord.

The media's drone of global pain and terror
was soothed in Eucharistic Presence.

Beneath the glow of sculptured glass
and flickering candle light
new strength can grow.

Again the Holy Ground abounds with
hope and trust that spring will
flower with blessings.
