Vincentian/Setonian Tradition Shines Through in Georgetown, South Carolina

Georgetown, SC, a small historic town nestled on Winyah Bay north of Charleston, is the site of St. Cyprian Parish and Outreach Center. The parish was founded for the African American Community in 1951. For most of its history the parish had a school staffed by the Franciscan Handmaids of the Most Pure Heart of Mary. The sisters withdrew in 1991, and the school closed. A year later four Daughters of Charity arrived and began, with a group of parishioners, to assess the needs of the parish and the neighborhood. Their basic question was, "How could they be of service in the Vincentian tradition?" Second, "How could they encourage others to participate in their ministry?"

An outreach center was opened which provided a variety of services, including a clothes closet, assistance with rent, utilities and medicine, an after school program and a hot meal program. All of these activities took place in the building attached to the church.   Cont on page 4

Local Frederick group Discovers
 Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton

At the request of Mr. Lance Lewis, President elect of the Civitan Club of Frederick, Maryland, I traveled to the Dan Dee Restaurant on Route 40 west to speak to the assembled group who was celebrating "Clergy Night". I learned that the word CIVITAN is coined from the word CIVITAS, which means citizenship. This group is dedicated to aiding the handicapped in the area.

This fine group of men and women belonging to the organization, and the members of the clergy, who were their invited guests, were very receptive to my talk on a fellow resident of Frederick County, albeit some years back, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. For many present, this was their first introduction to Elizabeth Ann Seton and the work of the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. As we left the meeting, many expressed their desire to visit the shrine and to experience this place made holy by the saint's presence from 1809 to 1821. Hopefully, we will welcome some of them this spring.
