Shrine Meditation Garden Sees Completion

It has been said, "you are never closer to God than when you are in a garden."
Started in September 1998, the Meditation Garden was completed in June of this year.  Mr. Sam Long, Grounds Manager of St. Joseph's Provincial House did the design and layout of the garden and with 483 hours of labor by the Grounds Crew the garden has come to life.  Special recognition goes to Mr. Leo Hobbs for his labor of love spending long hours in the bitter cold doing the masonry work.
Perennial gardens grow more beautiful with each passing year.  We will have a follow-up photo next year when the plants are larger and in bloom.  Three benches will be added to this area as soon as donations are received.

Shrine Associate Board Member Dies
Mr. Arthur L. Barry, Jr., Seton Shrine Associate Board member since 1991 died on June 15.  Mr. Barry, a Past Grand Knight, and his wife Elizabeth were invited to join the Board as representatives from the Knights of Columbus, Mother Seton Council No. 5381 at Lanham, MD.  Mr. Barry served as Secretary to the Board during 1993-1994 and as Vice Chairman from 1995 until his death.
    Mr. Barry had been
involved in promoting devotion to Mother Seton for several years.  As Church Activity Chairman for Mother Seton Council in 1974-1975, he organized a statewide Knights of Columbus project to solicit prayers for the canonization of Blessed Elizabeth Ann Seton.
In 1987 Art had a heart transplant resulting in a complete recovery without any rejection episodes.  He always attributed his
successful recovery to the intercession of St. Elizabeth Ann.
Art was instrumental in obtaining the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Honor Guard for several Shrine celebrations.
He was an example of an exemplary Catholic and an inspiration to us all by his love of God, Church, and St. Elizabeth Ann.  He will be missed by all.  Art is survived by his wife Betty and their ten children.

Father Daniel Kubala, as a graduate of Mt. St. Mary's Seminary, has a deep devotion to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.  In May, Father invited Sister Cecilia Rose to attend an original play written by a faculty member of St. Thomas the Apostle School, Miami, FL.  Sister was accompanied by Sister Veronica Berg from the Shrine.  The play was very well received. Curtain call on opening night is shown in the photo.
